Perl 5.12 is the latest major release of Perl 5. In addition to new features and numerous bugfixes, this release marks a major change in how we develop and release Perl. Come learn about how we’re refactoring the language and the community.

The “language” side of this talk will cover new language features in Perl 5.12, demonstrate significant bug fixes and explore features and fixes we opted not to include in 5.12.

The “community” side of this talk will cover how we’ve been evolving Perl 5’s development processes over the past year and where we’re heading over the next few.

Jesse Vincent is the founder of Best Practical Solutions and the creator of Request Tracker, the leading opensource ticketing system.

He’s the current project leader or ’pumpking’ for Perl 5. He has an unfortunate habit purchasing new gadgets designed to save time or make life easier…and ending up developing software for them.

In 2008, he bought one of the first phones running Android and ended up creating K-9 Mail, an advanced opensource email client.

More recently, he bought an ebook reader and found himself writing embedded ebook conversion software.

He lives in Somerville, Massachusetts in the US with his wife Kaia and their two cats.
