MondoRescue is a powerful and versatile GPL Disaster Recovery solution. It exists since 2000 and is now mature to a global solution used both to restore systems in case of emergency as well as to deploy dozens of systems having a similar configuration or migrating from physical to virtual and vice-versa.

MondoRescue can presently restore to bare metal from media as diverse as tape, DVD, USB keys or PXE. Unlike most imaging tools, MondoRescue provides full flexibility in terms of changing the system layout during restoring.

MondoRescue supports various file systems from ext2/3/4 to NTFS, including xfs, reiserfs, jfs. It also fully supports mecanisms such as LVM and HW/SW raid.

Thanks to mindi (creating a small restore system based on the underlying distribution), it provides various restoration options such as automatic, comparing, manual modes and focuses on having open and safe access to users data, whatever the situation encountered with afio usage.

MondoRescue also provides goodies such as compressor choice (gzip, bzip2, lzo), HW configuration backup (BIOS, Raid card, Management board for servers such as Proliant), …

The presentation will explain the various functions of the solution :

  • Backup image creation, (various FS supported, compression schemas, media, distributions…
  • Mindi, the mini-distro creating the environment needed for restoration (fully automized, interactive, compare mode, online…).
  • Some extended usages for which the presenters made patches (LVM v2 support, PXE, support …).
  • Creating an image deployment server suited for PXE restauration of mondo images.
  • Cloning techniques with mondo..

It will also explain the new orientations given to the project and the various aspects considered for 3.x

At last, we will also cover some important points done around project management (SVN, ML, trac, …)
