HTML4 evolved to XHTML1 and is now going towards HTML5 / XHTML5. It is not a way back move, despite some compromises due to old habbits, because the main wins of XHTML has been preserved: data and presentation layers are kept separated, meaningful code.
Among the main evolutions of HTML5: various sections types, semantic text tags and multimedia elements simplification.

On the stylesheets side, even if the CSS3 standard is not yet understood by the majority of Web browsers, it is usable right now for improved and advanced presentations, customized fonts, text and block shadow, rounded corners, automatic multi-column and geometric transformations.
It is also possible to select a stylesheet against used device (phone or computer) and its screen resolution.
